Day143: Mission 70 Accomplished.

Sunday, 31-Mar-2013; 9:30pm
Sector V, Salt Lake, Kolkata

A journey of 6 months ends today. Quitely.... Peacefully..... and Without any action. Yes, I had made a public commitment 6 months ago (on 13-Oct-2013), that I will reduce my body weight from 84 Kgs to 70 Kgs by healthy means and the deadline I had set for accomplishing this extremely important task of mine was 31st March 2013 i.e today. I feel pleased and happy to declare that:

I have accomplished my Target Weight of 70 Kgs today. yes, Mission 70 is Accomplished!!

Well! I must say, it's been a rewarding journey. Today, I reveal one secret goal behind M70. More than attaining the 70 Kg feat, my (top) goal was (and is) always to attain higher levels of fitness. I always wanted to gain such a healthy state that I feel energetic, enthusiastic, passionate, interested, ever smiling, cheerful and yes a Charismatic individual 24X7. I wanted to grow my immunity power to the maximum level, free myself from any disease, I wanted to become an individual who would become role model, first for self and then for others as well. 70 Kg was a mere benchmark I had set, say as some destination and what was more crucial was the journey throughout to reach the coveted destination. Yes, today I feel happy and satisfied.

My Motivation: My Doll. My Wife. My Parents

I look back at the past 6 months and recall of the events, big and small, that has happened in my life and I find myself in state of bliss. I couldn't have asked GOD for more. M70 was on my mind some 3 years ago, I made several attempts to attain my benchmark weight (of 70Kgs) though all my previous attempts were short lived and my motivation used to die down. One of the most miraculous and beautiful thing to have happened in my life is the birth of my daughter, my sweet angel. Two month after her birth, I kick started M70 and she was one of my greatest source of inspiration. I thought what kind of example I was to present to my next generation, health wise, personality wise, values wise. Although I had utterly failed  in my earlier attempts to re-tone my body, I decided, no-matter what, I will keep putting my efforts until I fulfill this goal of mine.

Mission 70: What I gained?

1. I have reduced on my habit of Procrastinating: Yes, I have come out of the web of putting off things. I no longer (or to a much lesser extent) feel the fear of failure or results that would not go my way. I am slowly learning to take decision and prioritize my activities and make the timelines for each of them. There is definitely infinite room for development in this area as well and I am still working on that.

2. I feel interested and happy. Yes, my interest towards talking, reading, making friends, eating, maintaining personal and professional hygiene and there must be several more things that has taken a quantum leap. I feel happy and satisfied from inside.

3. My self motivation has increased. I have been able to influence a few people with my talk, have been able to inspire a few of my co-workers to exercise regularly and even mentored them on their career aspirations. For the first time in my life I am realizing the power of my words.

4. I have done some good work in my work as well, which has brought in a lot of recognition (though no rewards yet, but certainly not far away). My Managers wants to retain me in their projects at any cost, I have a bigger role in bringing more revenue to my organization.

5. I get up earlier compared to a few months back when I could not even think of getting up at 7:30. Now a days, I usually get up by 5:30am to 6:30am.

Today M70 end. Err...Error...The first phase of Mission 70, would better call it this way... the first season (Season 1) of M70 ends today. The good news is that the Season 2 of Mission 70 begins tomorrow. Once again my Goal would be to take my fitness level to the next best level, always competing with my previous (day, hour, moment) self. Past 6 months I had focused on Cardiovascular exercises, Season 2 would be more about weight though without doubt Cardios will be present for a shorter time period. Now, my goal would be to maintain that weight of 70 Kg and build up more muscles and flatten my abdominal area. M70: Season2 would be of 9 months period (Finishing on 31st-Dec-2013). I would come up with more on this in my next post.

6 months ago I had visioned a slim and toned body. I feel blessed and happy to be owner of one now.

Looking forward for an useful Monday tomorrow and a great week ahead.

Good Night!!

Day142: Mission 70 (Penultimate Day): "You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget that errand." --Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the United States

Shed your past. Release your limits. No longer argue for why you can't have/do/become all you want. Today's a fresh day. You've been blessed with a new chance. To think better. To behave higher. To risk + stretch + excel + dream. And so my great encouragement for you is that you walk out into this day and live with audacity/ possibility/ mastery and model the best of your humanity. These are my sincere wishes. For you on this gift of a day. Be great. All green lights.

                                                                                                                              Robin Sharma

Great lines by a great human being. Robin, you are doing a great deed and I adore you for that. I am and will follow your (my) path and the greatest mission of my life has become to make lives for at least one person better by motivating, inspiring, and engaging them to do worthwhile things. I want to build bridges, and uplift people morally and mentally by creating awareness about living big.

It was a wonderful day to be alive. Today was the last but one day before the first phase of Mission 70 ends. After a long morning walk and finishing off my morning activities I went to office to close few of the tasks I need to, before Monday morning EST time. In the evening I went to Gym (M70: M6W23D56) and did cardio and abs exercises. Tomorrow marks the final day of M70 (first phase) when I will present you the final outcome - Have I missed on it or is M70 accomplished?

Looking forward to a bright Sunday.

Good Night to all.

Day141: “Work without love is slavery.” ― Mother Teresa

Friday, 29 March 2013; 11:05pm
Sector 5, Salt Lake, Kolkata

Seven Deadly Sins

Wealth without work
Pleasure without conscience
Science without humanity
Knowledge without character
Politics without principle
Commerce without morality
Worship without sacrifice.

                                                             - Mahatma Gandhi

It was quite a busy day at work. I kick started on a major project which might bring more revenue to my organization in the longer run; We may win a series of Projects from our customer based on my current deliverables. Well! bigger responsibility Narendra. Make your shoulders stronger Man. :)

Although its luxurious leaving in a 3 star facility Guest house (GH), only challenge I find is the food. Most of the food served here are not health friendly and that is one of the reasons I prefer staying in own accommodation. I am sick of all this oil rich food, maida made 'chapatis' , 'pooris', and  'rumali rotis'. I have started disliking the 'chickens' and the 'eggs' to great extent. It has all happened in the last 2 days of my stay here. I wish I could have some plain and least oily food on a trot. I will certainly make ways to improve on it for the rest of my stay here in GH.

This morning, I started the day with a mix of cardios and weights exercises (M70: M6W23D55). Final 2 days into M70. I am going to reveal the final outcome on 31st March 2013 for this Mission which I started some 6 months ago. Its been a journey of ups and downs, moments when I felt demotivated to hit the gym, when I fell sick, and there were moment when I felt energetic, enthusiastic and ready for the challenge. The best thing I liked was my persistence, my endurance and constancy of purpose :)

Looking forward to my first weekend in the city of Rosogullas!!

Good Night.

Day140: I’m sick of people sittin’ in chairs stating their problems. Then we roll the videotape… then we have our experts on the topic… I’m in the ‘What’s next?’ phase of my career. - Oprah Winfrey

Thursday, 28 March 2013; 7:17pm
Sector 5, Salt Lake, Kolkata

I started the day (M70: M6W2354) with an hour of exercise at the Gym facility near the campus guest house here. Well! am enjoying the hospitality received at the Guest house. At office, I met my project friends with whom I had been working virtually (from remote location) for almost 4 months. They were happy to see me and so was I. I did work for some 1 hour today and rest of the time went in familiarizing with people, arranging for my desktop, getting my new local number etc. The big boss here offered me leadership and more of client facing roles. I feel ready for the next challenge because no person on this earth can grow in his comfortable zone. You have to accept challenges at face value and overcome them. You may falter, fall on the way but that's part of the whole learning and growing process.

I call it a day to devote some time to my new found hobby of reading book, looking forward to finish reading the leader who had no title this week.

Good Night and Keep Rocking

Day139: “If you want to write, you can. Fear stops most people from writing, not lack of talent. Who am I? What right have I to speak? Who will listen to me? You are a human being with a unique story to tell. You have every right.” – Richard Rhodes

Wed/Thu, 27/28 March 2013; 11:30pm
Sector 5, Salt Lake, Kolkata, WB

Hope you had a nice Holi celebration with your family and friends. I had no option but felt the excitement of Holi over the phone when I was talking with my loved ones.

A little while ago, I was watching a free webinar on writing books. It was an interview with noted motivational speaker and author Brian Tracy, related to a course on  "How to write a Book and become a published Author" . It encouraged me one step further in my Vision (and Goal) of writing a Book oneday (for sure). Here is the Link for you to motivate yourselves to writing a book.

Once again, on this public forum I make yet another commitment:

"I will write a book which will be published in the next 5 years time" ......Narendra Gupta
Time of Commitment: 11:58pm,27 March 2013.
  Deadline: 11:58pm, 27 March 2018

Well!, let me confess at this stage, I do not have any idea what will be the title of my book without much clarity on the contents, though I wish to bring positive and meaningful changes in the lives of thousands, possibly millions of people around the world. I will come up more on this later.

Okay, moving on, the latest update is..I landed safely in Kolkata today. It was a holiday on account of the festival of colors, Holi here (and not in Bangalore). Kolkata welcomed me with a temperature of 33 Degree Celsius and some real hot winds :). Lets see how the next few days are going to unfold. Mission 70 is into its final week, only 4 days remaining. I look forward to working out for the first time on the Kolkata soil, need to meet my goal of minimum 3 days of workout this week.

Tomorrow I meet people with whom I had been working for 4 months virtually, talked (over voip, mobile, landline) chatted (over the online messenger) with them for each single day but never saw them in person. I am going to meet my Team based out of Kolkata tomorrow. I feel happy about it. Hope they would be equally excited as I am.

Signing off for today. See you tomorrow.

Good Night. Keep Winning.

Happy Holi

I wish a very, very Happy Holi to all my Friends, Readers, and every single Person on Earth who celebrates Holi. May the festival of colors bring more color, enthusiasm, passion, grit, determination, patience, perseverance to each one of our lives. May you and I forgive those who deserve to be forgiven, bury our ego and celebrate this short life together. Well! not only today or tomorrow but for ever. If you are with family, I am sure you will have the best of time.

One of the posts on FB related to Holi amuses me. It had pics of people celebrating Holi in different places in India. For Bangalore, it was all monotonous, working in front of this 14 inch screen, yes sadly but true, it is not a Holiday here. Due to an urgent business requirement, I am traveling to Kolkata tomorrow for 2 weeks. So half of my Holi will be in Bangalore and the other half in Kolkata :)

Once again wishing Very Very Happy Holi to you and all your family Members.

Holi hai Bhai Holi hai!!
Enjoy Holi!

Day137:Great work is done by people who are not afraid to be great. - Fernando Flores

Monday, 25 March 2013; 10:00pm
Electronic City, Bangalore

I am into the final week of What I call the First Phase of M-70. I felt somewhat lethargic and lacked energy to hit the Gym today. This afternoon, met my Practice Head to discuss regarding my future assignment and role. He encouraged to take bigger and challenging roles, to lead a bigger team. He is a cool headed person who encourages people. In spite of his higher position and much bigger responsibilities, he gives time and listens to individual's concerns empathetically. Well, I am thankful to Anil for his mentorship.

Today I, yet again make a public commitment that this might be my Final Year at Wipro and a lot depends on my Compensation Hike this appraisal cycle. Wipro deserves me or not will be known in a few months time.

I stop it here, will devote some time towards reading before I sleep.

Day136: “Passion has little to do with euphoria and everything to do with patience. It is not about feeling good. It is about endurance. Like patience, passion comes from the same Latin root: pati. It does not mean to flow with exuberance. It means to suffer.” ― Mark Z. Danielewski, House of Leaves

Another day, when I pursued my passion. This Feb and March, when I went on a trip to Home, along with loads of beautiful memories, I brought with me, my First Personal Diary in which I wrote from the Year 1999-2002. The specialty about this Diary is that it includes the only 8 Poems I had written in this period. The Poet in me went on a deep and long slumber after 2002 as I went for my Engineering studies in 2003 followed by Job and then again my Master's studies in 2011. Well!...I feel like writing Poems again, the poet in me is slowly awakening, though it will take time before I publish my poems in current era. I however will publish my Poems I wrote as a school going kid soon. Today I scanned the soft copy my first ever Poem titled 'सचिन तू महान है' which I wrote in the Year 1997. Stay tuned!!

Apart from this, I was invited for lunch by my entrepreneur friend and neighbor, Dileep. Special recipe was fish curry. Loved the food prepared by Bhabhi. Thanks to Dileep and Bhabhi for all that hospitality.

My Baby doll, as she is growing, I feel elated to hear her small developments and few of her mischief activities. Today, Sanskriti spilled water filled in a jug kept near to her, tore the cover page of the Newspaper before her Nana Jee could read it... :)

Looking forwards for a fruitful Monday..

Good night to all my Friend and Readers

Day135: “Deserves it! I daresay he does. Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends.” ― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

Saturday was a day of my passion, passion towards writing, passion towards fulfilling commitments and passion towards fulfilling my dreams. Today, I devoted to writing on my recent Home trip. Hope you would like it. Here is the link: http://mainarendra.blogspot.in/2013/03/a-memorable-trip-trip-to-home-feb-march.html. Do read and share your feedback on my writing. Well!, after attending Abhijit Bhaduri's session on 'The importance of feedback in growth and development', I really seek feedback from each of my readers.

Moving on, remembering the 16 Dec 2012 Delhi rape case victim, Damini, one of the prime perpetrators, Ram Singh committed suicide, rather was killed either by Jail authorities or his fellow men in the cell recently. He did receive what he deserved but not in fashion it should have been. Well!.. Indian Judicial system is a delayed Justice System. I hope the remaining 5 victims of the menial crime get deserving punishments.

I change my FB profile pic today.

Good Night and Good Morning to all of you!!

"Your family and your love must be cultivated like a garden. Time, effort, and imagination must be summoned constantly to keep any relationship flourishing and growing."

Someone has rightly said "Life is a precious gift and its worth recording". This Feb and March, I visited my family and home in Jharkhand and Bihar. There are so many things I wish to share about the trip, many first time experiences, with moments of fun, celebration and excitement, and a lot about my little doll, my darling daughter, Sanskriti who is 7 months old now. After a short prologue, I present to you saga of the time spent with my loved and very very special ones.

Prologue:

After completing a mandatory, day long training at work, finishing off project deliverables, I said 'Good Bye' to all my office friends. I was so happy and excited, why not?, was traveling home after 6 long months, missing my baby so badly. It was the evening of 19th February. Later, I learnt about the major Bus strike on 20th and 21st Feb. Without taking any chances, I hired a cab for the early morning travel to Yesvantpur Railway Station. I spent the whole night (in) packing stuffs (Due to hectic schedule at work, couldn't do this earlier) without a single moment of sleep. The cab was at 5 am in the morning and I was quite apprehensive of missing the cab, if I fall asleep. It is another fact that I have beaten alarm on multiple occasions (99.5 % times :)) earlier in my life. I reached the far away station 2 hours in advance. And finally, my journey to hometown began...

2 days at Bokaro (Steel City):

After a somewhat boring journey, I reached Bokaro, the city where I was born and brought up, the city to which so many memories of childhood remains hooked to my mind, at around 2 am in the wee hours of 22nd Feb. My god like parents were eagerly waiting for me. Mom had prepared delicious and some of my favorite dishes.   In spite of saying I had my dinner in Ranchi early in the evening, Maa (Mom) insisted that its already 4-5 hours since you ate last and you must eat at least 2 ‘rotis’ (chapatis) before you go to sleep. Well!, instead of 2 ‘rotis’, I ate full stomach along with Papa. After all, I was eating Mom made food after (many) months, it had all the love of the world apart from being so scrumptious.  After some heart warming conversation on family related matters with my dearest parents I went for sleeping at 4am in the morning. In this way, Day1 of my trip started…

Later in the morning after getting up (from bed), I went to see Rabindra Bhaia, Bhabhi Jee and their two lovely kids. I had nice time talking and playing with the two angels. In the evening, after some shopping in the small sector 6 market with Papa Jee, I went to meet some elderly people in society, of course with sweets, I was going to see them after ages. It felt so good to take their blessings, know how they are doing in their lives, whereabouts of their kids, and many more updates of their world, their life to which I was disconnected for a long period. I felt so good to be in touch with them once again and in fact they also felt exceedingly pleasing to see me after so many years. I remember they use to give 'me' as an example of bright student to their kids and as a result I was envied by them (their kids, on the lighter side).

Day2 and final day in Bokaro was dedicated to my Didi (sister), Jeeju and their 3 adorable children, Raja, Prinshy and Rishabh. I along with Maa, Paa were suppose to travel to Village (My father’s birthplace) late in the eveing that day, so we packed all our stuff in the morining before leaving to Didi’s place. We reached sector 9 at around 11 in the morning. Being the youngest of all siblings and Didi next to me, I share a special bond with her, she had always been like my Mother. Since childhood, I enjoyed  share of her food, she covered up for my mistakes and happily listened to all the scoldings from Bade Bhaia or Maa (Yes Papa, never scolded or beat us). So the next few hours I was going to spend with them were so very important for us, I wished I had more number of holidays. Didi had prepared a lot of dishes, all my favorite ones, she cooked food even for our late evening travel.

I must tell you about my 3 small but way smarter than me friends. No one in the world is as happy and excited than Didi’s 3 kids on my arrival to the city. I had been missing all their birthdays for many years and in spite of telling them (over phone), I would celebrate once I reach Bokaro, I had been missing on that in my past visits. Well!... not this time. We celebrated a ‘Special Birthday’ of my 3 angelic friends and they were ecstatic like never before. Here is a glimpse of those precious moments.

Special Birthday to Prinshy, Rishabh and Raja

After spending, what I call, some very very special moments with Didi and family, we departed with a heavy heart. Later in the evening, after meeting Bhaia, Bhabhi Jee and their two kids, we left for the Railway station. The first leg of my trip was getting over. The train started at around 11 in the night and I eventually said a good bye to Bokaro.

1 Day at Village ( in Samastipur):

I was little angry over the excessive (unnecessary, in my perspective) luggage which Papa Jee and Mommy always carry during their travel. Sometime I am not able to think from their perspective, what is important for them, why they feel so connected to small stuffs (I cannot explain in words everything, to be honest with). Out of my short-temperedness, I might have told him few things which I should not have told as a son. I feel sorry about my behavior. In fact this was the only 'not-so-good' moment of the entire trip. I care for them like they cared for me when I was a child and I want to see them really happy. I already apologized him in person, I repeat once again, I am sorry Papa, if at all you felt my words were harsh and not pleasant to your ears.

We reached village ( 40 kms from Samastipur railway station) at around 12 in the noon. Munna, my cousin had come to receive us along with 2 other family kids at the Village bus stand. We walked some distance, crossed a river (Baghmati) and in the process enjoyed the boat ride, eventually reaching our home.

I caste my Vote for the first time:

Co-incidentally, it was a bye-elction day in my region due to the sudden demise of the current MLA and with this I got the opportunity to exercise my one of the most important fundamental rights as an Indian citizen, the right to vote. Yes, I caste my vote for the first time ever. I had missed previous opportunities living away from home either due to studies or job in previous election times. This was a rich experience, I can still see the marks of black ink on the index finger of my right hand.

Thereafter, I met villagers greeting them either with hands in Namaskar position or touching their feet (a polite manner to take blessings of elders in our part of the world –info for my  Non-Indian readers J) . I distributed sweets and fruits among the villagers. They became so happy with my small gesture. Loved eating food prepared by 'Chachi Jee' (Aunt). I spent the whole day meeting different people in village, encouraged elders to educate their children sincerely and seriously to which most of the villagers responded positively though few people had their own excuses and complaints about education system, infrastructure, kids reluctance to studies and so on.

With the sun rising, the next morning, my lone day of stay in my native place was coming to an end.  I was due to travel to see my little doll at my Wife’s place in Madhbani, 5 hours drive from Baghla, my village. I said Good bye to Villagers and family people and left for my third and final of my trip.

I meet my Baby:

Sanskriti with her Dad (Me)
I was longing to see my doll. I had not seen my baby in last 6 months. I reached Benipatti at about 4 o’clock in the afternoon. Ashu, my Brother in Law (BIL) came along with Sanskriti, to receive me at the bus stop. I held my baby in my lap hiding all my emotions in the public place. She was just 8 days old into this world when I had seen her last..... Well! Benipatti and the whole ‘Mithilanchal’ region is famous for greeting all their guests and son-in-laws in particular, with utmost respect and a heart-warming welcome. There is something sweet about this region, and it all starts from the sweetness in their language (Maithili) without a speck of ostentation mixed.

Nothing in the world makes me happier than the smiling face of my Wifey and my infant kid. I had a marvel of time spending with family at in-law's place.

BIL's Engagement and Visit to Bodh Gaya:

Next day close relatives started pouring in and the special occasion was my elder BIL’s engagement. The most eligible bachelor in family was going to get hitched. We left for Gaya in the early hours of 27th Feb and reached only by late in the evening. The engagement function was due to be held at a 3-star facility in the holy city of Bodh-Gaya. It was a proud and one of the happiest moment for the entire family. Bhai Jee(That is how I call my elder BIL),  was looking resplendent in his maroon suite with a tie on this special day of his life and so was his soul-mate in her shining bridal wear. I wish him a Very, Very Happy and an ever lasting Married Life. God bless the couple. Well!, I am eagerly waiting for their marriage day due in a month’s time. Here is a first look of the made-for-each-other couple.

Bhai Jee and Bhabhi

It was a memorable day for me for yet another reason, also another first time experience. While I was going on stage after the ring ceremony along with Sanskriti and Rani, my doll peed in my lap for the first time ever. It was indeed a memorable occasion for me. Captured in camera to reminisce that moment after many years. Have a look.

Sanskriti peed on my shirt for the first time ...a memorable moment

After that momentous day, it was time to take advantage of the opportunity to visit the holy city of Bodh Gaya where Lord Buddha obtained enlightenment. We visited the Mahabodhi temple complex, where saw the colossal (80 Feet) idol of Gautam Buddha, the tree where God Buddha is said to have received enlightenment, and a series of few other temples, we also visited the pond where I along with my daughter fed grains to the fishes.

Bodh Gaya

After a soul-satisfying meal, we left for Benipatti in the afternoon (of 28th Feb). I thoroughly enjoyed the time spent in the onward and return journey with kids and got the opportunity to interact with some elderly people in family (from in-law’s side) for the first time.

My Birthday and Sanskriti's Annaprashan Ceremony:

My planned leaves were already over by now. I hardly got time to spend moments exclusively with Wifey and Sanskriti. So, I planned to extend my leave and take some unplanned leaves. My birthday was approaching (04th March) and I had plans to conduct  Annaprashan ceremony (A formal ceremony which marks the beginning of solid food) for Sanskriti, my cutie, my darling doll.

It was my Birthday. And I was spending this special day with family after a gap of 11 years. Well I shared my Birthday with Prince, a small kid in neighborhood. Presence of Ashu, my younger BIL made it more special. What you see in the pic below is all his work.

04 March: Prince and Mine Birthday

Well!.. if you are chuckling looking at this pic, let me tell you the small toy baby was a gift for Sanskriti by her ‘Mousi’ (Wifey’s sister) and not for me J. I must admit, this was one of the most memorable birthday in recent times.

Sanskriti's Annaprashan:

After Birthday celebration, it was time for Sanskriti’s Annaprashan ceremony. Family customs says that Baby’s Mama Jee (Maternal Uncle) initiates the annaprashan in a silver bowl with a silver spoon (‘chandi ki katori’ aur ‘chandi ka chamach’ as the elderly people in family say). As far as I am concerned ‘chandi’ (silver) and ‘sona’ (Gold) carries zero value in the given context, and what is important is the food and love.  Have a glimpse of Sanskriti being fed by Ashu, her 'Chhote Mama Jee’.

Sanskriti with her Mama Jee
My doll was asleep and we had to make efforts to awaken her… as you can notice in the pic above.

My departure and travel back to Bangalore:

The final leg of a memorable trip was getting over. I travelled back to Bangalore the next day (05th March). What a trip it had been. I can’t ask for more love and respect from my family. I love and adore each one of them.

This completes my saga of the days I spent with family.

I conclude this blog-piece with Elburt Hubbard’s saying:

No matter what you have done for yourself or for humanity, if you can’t look back on having given love and attention to your own family, what have you really accomplished? “

With Love,
